Old Lyme housing project poorly placed

    How many more times?

The conclusion of the public hearing on affordable housing in Old Lyme left me shaking my head. The first two plus hours involved Hope Partners' lawyer, architects, and engineers, (both design/traffic), explaining procedure for permitting, traffic studies, modifications to plans etc.; then the public's turn to comment.

The obligation of the zoning commission according to state law is matters of health and safety; period. Curiously, the sidewalk to Route 156 had been removed from the plans. To think this will prevent pedestrians and or bicyclists, (especially kids), from trying to transit 156 enroute to the shopping centers is ludicrous. This glaring omission of consideration, from the start, circles around to the undeniable fact, (among a list of others), this is the wrong site for the intended use.

To Jane Marsh's credit, (zoning commission member), the traffic engineers' results were questioned by a local using her common sense knowledge of the complicated traffic flow patterns.

In all three public hearings, 95 percent of the public were not against affordable housing; just not at this location.

Shame on the commission if they approve this project location.
