Some fans are excited with the University of Connecticut’s return to the Big East. Some aren’t.

I can assure you of this: If UConn administrator’s de-emphasize football, UConn won’t be a renowned major university in the future.

Football is a great American sport, but it’s a contact sport. Traumatic injuries can occur, but to my knowledge UConn has not had any in the modern era. Parents must decide if the benefits outweigh the risks. With increased safety developments in football gear and by rule changes there may be better safety in the future.

The University of New Haven was successful before it dropped football. It restarted it and it has become a success.

Connecticut administrators claim they won’t de-emphasize football, but things could change. I predict that we may have seven seasons to turn things around.

I hope parents of star football players in state high and prep schools encourage their sons to consider UConn. Sending them to schools with 100,000-seat stadiums may not be right for all. Sitting on the bench at a football school may not be a wise move.

I want future generations to enjoy youth, high school, prep and college football. Attend UConn games, enjoy tailgating, please help save UConn football.
