North Stonington residents to vote Monday on proposed budget

North Stonington — Residents on Monday will vote for the first time on the proposed budget for 2017-18.

The polls will be open from noon to 8 p.m. at Town Hall.

This is the first time the $19.25 million general government budget is being put to a vote this year, as North Stonington officials held off on proposing a budget until the state budget passed, and allocation for North Stonington was made clear.

Voters also will be asked to vote on approving the annual Board of Education spending plan for 2017-18, as well, which is budgeted at $12.87 million.

If passed, the general government budget would eliminate or consolidate several positions to make room for an administration and finance officer. These positions include economic development coordinator, town clerk for records for preservation and transfer station labor positions. The administration and finance officer's salary would be $75,000.

The subject of hiring an administration and finance officer came up during the first selectman campaign, and continues to be something that First Selectman Mike Urgo supports, saying it will help everyone be successful if there is someone who can really own administration and finance and liaison with the town's various boards and commissions.

The budget also accounts for the $500,000 principle payment for the school modernization project.
