Volunteers sought for Civil War Park Day

History buffs, preservationists and community volunteers are being invited Saturday, April 7, to join Coast Guard cadets to help clean and restore Fort Trumbull, the Revolutionary War-era fortification overrun by the British in September 1781.

Members of the Civil War Trust will be hosting the event from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., since Fort Trumbull also served during the 1860s as a center for inducting and training Union Army recruits. See www.civilwar.org for information.

For the sixth year, volunteers will paint, caulk, rake, dust and clean, along with other maintenance tasks.

For information, phone 860-444-7591 or email Chris Purrone at purrone@sbcglobal.net. Meet at the Visitor’s Center Lobby to register and be assigned to a project.

Participants are asked to bring work gloves. Supplies and snacks will be provided by the Friends of Fort Trumbull. A Civil War Trust t-shirt and patch will be given to each participant, rain or shine.

To learn more about the Friends of Fort Trumbull, go to www.fortfriends.org or search Facebook for Friends of Fort Trumbull State Park.
