    Fitch runners awarded Kelley scholarships

Tom Readett and Mitchell Shapiro-Albert, both runners and graduating seniors at Fitch Senior High School in Groton, have been awarded $1,500 scholarships by the John J. Kelley Memorial Fund.

Readett plans to attend Manhattan School of Music in the fall while Shapiro-Albert will attend Tufts University.

The scholarships, presented by Jim Roy, chairman of the memorial fund, are given in honor of Kelley, a former Fitch teacher and cross-country coach who won the Boston Marathon in 1957 and competed twice in the Olympics.

The scholarships are awarded annually to Fitch seniors who exhibit kindness and good sportsmanship, two attributes that Kelley exemplified.
