Mashantucket museum hosting food summit next week

Mashantucket — The Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center announced Tuesday that it will host the inaugural Intertribal Food Sovereignty Summit from Aug. 20 to 23.

Representatives from 40 Native American tribes and the U.S. Department of Agriculture and food sovereignty experts will participate in the three-day event, covering such topics as forming tribal farm enterprises, cultivating seed banks, managing aquaponics and fish hatcheries, utilizing wild medicinals and improving tribal lands through conservation partnerships.

Attendees will visit a variety of indigenous food landscapes.

“This event is for anyone who values Native food sovereignty,” said Cliff Sebastian IV, the museum’s marketing director and Mashantucket Pequot tribal member. “Whether you grow, gather, cook or sell indigenous foods, or you work in forest, waterway, air, soil or plant conservation, this summit will introduce you to leaders whose invaluable expertise will inform, inspire and foster growth among our Native food ways.”

Tickets are available online at bit.ly/TribalFood. All meals are included and will be prepared by a team of renowned indigenous chefs.

The event is being produced by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, Narragansett Indian Tribe, Narragansett Food Sovereignty Initiative, Intertribal Agriculture Council and Natural Resources Conservation Service.
