North Stonington takes precautionary measures against EEE

North Stonington — The town continues to take precautionary measures after Eastern Equine Encephalitis was detected in mosquitoes in two separate sites last week.

Town recreation activities will end at 6 p.m. as the warm weather is expected to continue, according to a news release issued Tuesday. The mild conditions allow mosquitoes to stay active and their population to increase, the release said. EEE is a deadly disease and although the risk of transmission is relatively low, town officials have been in contact with Ledge Light Health District and the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station and have determined there is a need for the protective measures to remain in place.

CAES planned to conduct additional sampling Tuesday and Wednesday nights, but the results won’t be available until early next week, the release said. The town said it will continue the protective measures until it receives notification of negative mosquito tests, or until a hard frost occurs.

Residents are advised to minimize time outside at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. Residents also should ensure door and window screens are tight-fitting and are in good repair, the release said. Wearing shoes, socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts, made of tightly woven materials, is advised. Residents should use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors and use repellent when necessary.
