Norwich school board member announces resignation

Norwich — Board of Education member James Maloney announced Friday that he will resign from the board to devote time to fighting a forgery charge and to free the board to focus on education issues.

Maloney, 36, of 155 Boswell Ave. was charged Monday with second-degree forgery after police said he forged an insurance document sent to the city Recreation Department for the Norwich Night Flight Basketball League’s application to use the Jenkins basketball court on High Street for a men’s tournament May 30 and 31.

Maloney disputes the police report and said he will fight the charge. Earlier this week, he said he would not resign from the school board. On Friday he declined to discuss his change of mind in detail.

“I need to fight these allegations, and I don’t want to take the focus off of the board,” Maloney, a Democrat, said Friday. “That’s all I can really say right now.”

Maloney, the former president of the Night Flight Basketball League, also is in a dispute with the current leaders of the league committee over league finances.
