Norwich — Mathematics teacher Clarence C. Cooper has been named director of Norwich Free Academy’s Night School Program, Head of School David J. Klein announced Friday.

Cooper, an 18-year veteran mathematics teacher, served as interim director of the program last year.

The program includes night classes for students wishing to continue their education in a nontraditional path. Personal and life circumstances sometimes make it difficult for students to attend daily classes, but evening classes offer an alternative. The program also includes the Alternative Pathway to Success, with courses and curriculum to assist students who will move into adult education or another life option without having received an NFA diploma. These classes offer students opportunities to solidify their preparation to help them succeed.

Cooper holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from East Carolina University, a Master of Science degree in elementary education from Southern Connecticut State University and a sixth-year certification in administration from Sacred Heart University. Before coming to NFA in 2001, he taught mathematics in New London, New Haven, and Farmville, N. C.

“Clarence Cooper’s successful administration of NFA’s Summer School Credit Recovery Program and his extensive work both in the classroom and with non-traditional students makes him the perfect choice for this position,” Klein said in a news release. “I have a great deal of confidence in Mr. Cooper and his ability to continue to lead these important programs.”

Cooper added, "I pride myself on being an advocate for our students. This position will help me be an even stronger advocate for our students.”
