    Local roundup: Valley/Old Lyme cruises past Morgan 48-7

    Deep River — Nick Braga accounted for 105 yards of total offense on just six plays and scored three touchdowns as Valley Regional/Deep River rolled to a 48-7 football victory over Morgan School on Friday night.

    All the scoring was done in the first half.

    Braga caught two passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns and had four carries for 38 yards and a third TD for the Warriors (2-0), who limited Morgan (0-2) to just two total yards on the night, including minus-8 rushing on 11 carries.

    Quarterback Michael Cullina completed 8 of 9 passes for 159 yards and the two TDs to Braga while Ryan Santos rushed for 76 yards on five carries and two touchdowns. Jake Kruszewski (eight yards) and Arik Outama (five yards) also had TD runs for Valley/Old Lyme, which scored 42 straight points after falling behind 7-6 early in the game.

    In other games:

    • Griswold jumped out to a 9-0 halftime lead and went on to beat Waterford 29-13. Peter Turello threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Lancers (0-2), hitting Max Mazzella and Marcus Elliott for scores. "Our offense was stifled tonight,'' Waterford coach John Strecker said. "We couldn't run the ball at all.''

    • Ledyard scored twice in the fourth quarter in a 32-14 loss to Creed/Career/Whitney Tech, a cooperative program from the Constitution State Conference. Max Ebdon threw a touchdown pass to Stanley Green and Preston Poulton recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown for Ledyard (1-1). Creed is also 1-1.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Casey Kozlowski (six aces) and Olivia Pacheco (five kills) helped Waterford beat Windham 3-0. Game scores were 25-4, 25-9 and 25-5. Gretchen Dusza added 18 assists for the Lancers (4-0).

    • Mackenzie Ullrich had 15 assists and four kills to highlight Montville's 25-18, 25-21, 25-22 over Wheeler. Indigo Whisman added 10 digs and six aces, and Abby Diamantini had 11 digs and two aces for the Indians (3-1). Samantha Caster had 15 assists, two aces and four digs for Wheeler (1-3) while Nikki Collins added seven kills, six digs and three aces, and Sarah Spraklin had seven kills, six digs and one ace.

    • Glastonbury bounced back from a loss in the first game to defeat Fitch 19-25, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-16 in a nonconference game. Nora Ryan had five kills and seven digs for the Falcons (1-2) while Aby Hagley added seven digs, Olivia Carney 14 assists and Maryah Dart 11 service points.

    • Ellis Tech defeated Grasso Tech 3-0 in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Ahryon Evans had five digs and two aces, Erin Blake four digs and three assists, and Hailey Beal five digs, one kill, one block and two service points for Grasso Tech.

    • Norwich Tech outlasted Wilcox Tech 3-2 in the CTC. Game scores were 20-25, 25-15, 25-22, 19-25 and 19-17. Halle Baron had 16 assists, 12 digs and three aces for the Warriors (4-1) while Stacey Johnson added 10 kills and Courtney Majewski had 14 digs and three aces.

    • Natalie Golden had eight digs and four aces in Old Lyme's 3-0 loss to Cromwell (25-13, 25-20, 25-15). Maddie Cann (seven kills) and Una Barrett (11 assists) also contributed to the Wildcats' cause.

    H.S. girls swimming

    • Taylor Gray set an East Lyme pool record in the 100 breast with a time of 1 minute, 9.49 seconds to help the Vikings beat Lyman Memorial-Windham Tech, 108-54. Kate Orefice captured the 100 free (1:00.58) and also was on the winning 200 medley and 200 free relay teams for the Vikings (3-0, 3-0 ECC).

    • Waterford picked up its first win with a 103-78 win over NFA. Elyse Gathy (200-meter freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Ella Dyjak (200 IM, 100 butterfly) were double winners for the Lancers (1-2, 1-2) while Elizabeth Hawkins (400 free) earned her first varsity victory. For NFA (1-2, 1-1), Anna Ciriello broke the school diving record with 205.65 points.

    • Alyson Lowney won the 200 and 500-yard freestyles and was part of two winning relay teams as Fitch outlasted Ledyard 88-81 in the ECC. Danielle Millerick added a win in the 50 free for the Falcons (2-0, 2-0) and was also part of the two relay teams. Maddie Johanson won the 200 IM and 100 breastroke while Olivia Strelevitz captured the 100 free and 100 backstroke for the Colonels (1-2, 1-2).

    College field hockey

    • Top-ranked UConn exploded for five second half goals to rout Old Dominion 6-0 in the Big East opener. The Huskies (6-0, 1-0) have won 18 straight Big East regular season games dating baack to 2013. Charlotte Veitner and Margo van Hecking Colenbrander scored two goals apiece for UConn while goalie Nina Klein made two saves for her third shutout.
