    Local roundup: Old Lyme boys rout Hale-Ray

    Old Lyme — Jacob Coverdale scored 10 points and Ray Doll had six points, six assists and eight rebounds as Old Lyme beat Hale-Ray 58-28 on Wednesday in a Shoreline Conference boys’ basketball game.

    Quinn Romeo had eight points, three assists, two blocks and two steals for Old Lyme (15-5, 14-4)) and Brady Sheffield scored nine.

    The Wildcats are seeded third and will host No. 6 Valley Regional on Saturday in the conference quarterfinals at a time to be announced.

    In other games:

    • Wheeler's season came to an end with a 76-41 loss to Woodstock Academy in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II tournament first round. Ian Spracklin led the No. 10 Lions, who finish 2-19, while Bowen Baker added 11 points and Scott Pion had seven rebounds. No. 7 Woodstock will play at No. 2 Plainfield in Thursday's quarterfinals at 6 p.m.

    • Ninth-seeded Montville beat No. 8 Tourtellotte 70-58 in the ECC Division II first round. The Indians (4-17) will play at top-seeded St. Bernard in Thursday's quarterfinals at 7 p.m. The Saints (18-2) are the defending Division II champion.

    • Mehmet Turner had 16 points in MacDuffie's 74-42 win over Williams in the SENE semifinals. Zain Alan had 20 points for Williams and August Chapman and Grayson Guinan both scored 10.

    Girls' basketball

    • Providence Country Day advanced to the SENE title game with a 61-47 semifinal win over Williams School. Senior Marie Grillo scored 19 points in her final game while fellow senior Katia Bourganos added 18.

    Men's basketball

    • St. Thomas More's KK Curry took a charge with four seconds remaining and the Chancellors up one to preserve an 85-82 win over New Hampton Prep. Miles Tention led T-More with 21 points and seven assists while Curry finished with 15 points and DJ Mitchell, whose only points (a 3-pointer) gave the Chancellors the lead, added seven rebounds and five assists.

    Women's basketball

    • WPI broke open a close game with an 18-0 run to end the third quarter and the second-seeded Engineers went on to defeat No. 7 Coast Guard Academy 72-42 in the first round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament.

    Junior Micaela Martinelli scored 19 points for the Bears, who finish 13-13, while senior had nine rebounds. Gerton finished her career as only the fourth player in program history with over 1,000 points (1,078) and over 700 rebounds (747). She also was the first player in program history to record over 100 blocks (135).

    Freshman Meg Donovan scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead WPI (21-5).

    H.S. swimming

    • The Williams School boys won the Providence Cup Championship behind a school-record performance by William Jarrett in the 100-yard backstroke. The Blues finished with 114 points, 14 better than Moses Brown. Joe Sullivan added a win in the 100 butterfly while Cyrus D'Arcy captured the 100 breaststroke.

    In the girls' meet, Williams placed third with 81 points as the 200 freestyle relay team of Elizabeth Li, Ellie Fader, Alessandra D'Arcy and Grace Cassineri were victorious, D'Arcy broke a school record in the 100 buterfly and Cassineri won the 500 freestyle.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Brandon Pavoni had six goals and three assists as Ava Maria downed Mitchell College 18-8 in the season opener. Kyle Marsh had three goals and an assist for Mitchell and Jesse McKeever had two goals and two assists.

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Norwich Free Academy and Stonington have qualified for the CIAC team championship meets, which will be held on Saturday at Pomperaug High School. The Wildcats are seeded sixth in Class L with a 128.41 scoring average while the Bears are seeded fourth in Class S with a 129.69 average. The Class S meet begins at 9 a.m., the Class L meet starts at 1 p.m., and the Class M meet will begin at 5.
