Black Wolves continue their fight for a playoff spot Saturday at Rochester

There’s no breathing room yet … and there isn’t likely to be for the New England Black Wolves.

Despite back-to-back wins, last week’s on the road at Colorado, no less, the Black Wolves enter the final two weeks of the regular season in the National Lacrosse League fighting to extend their season. The Wolves are 8-8 going into Saturday’s game at Rochester (9-7), beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Blue Cross Arena.

No teams in the NLL Eastern Division have clinched a playoff berth yet.

Rochester and Georgia are tied for the lead at 9-7, followed by Buffalo and New England at 8-8 and Toronto at 7-9. The top three teams qualify for the playoffs, although the Wolves would have to finish ahead of Buffalo, with Buffalo holding the tiebreaker.

The Black Wolves cannot either clinch a spot or be eliminated with the outcome, meaning the season will come down to an April 29 game against the Georgia Swarm at Mohegan Sun Arena.

“Pretty much the same situation we’ve been in for the last three weeks, to be honest,” New England coach Glenn Clark said in his weekly teleconference. “I don’t think a whole lot has changed. We’ve certainly kept ourselves in the mix … we’re not in a position where there is any comfort level at all. We’re pretty much playing playoff lacrosse right now in terms of desperation and necessity of wins.

“We’re up against it like we have been the last couple weeks.”

Kevin Crowley leads the Black Wolves with 69 points on a team-high 49 goals to go with 20 assists and has seven straight hat tricks to his credit. Stephan Leblanc has 21 goals and a team-best 40 assists for 61 points. Aaron Bold leads the NLL with 621 saves. The Black Wolves are 2-0 this season against the Knighthawks.

Rochester’s Joe Resetarits has 34 goals and 58 assists for 92 points.
