    Local colleges: CGA freshman Mooney qualifies for national track meet

    New London — Coast Guard Academy freshman Kaitlyn Mooney has qualified to take part in the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships this week in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

    Mooney will compete in the 5K. She set a school record of 16:52.70 during the Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College in April, the 15th fastest time in Division III this season. The top 22 athletes in each event were accepted into the competition, which begins Thursday. Mooney's race will be held on Saturday.

    It's been quite a freshman season for Mooney, who earned All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship after becoming the top freshman finisher since 2013 by taking fourth place (20:48.3). She was then an All-American twice during the indoor season finishing in fifth place in the 3K (9:46.79) and anchoring the distance medley relay team to a seventh place finish (11:50.97).

    Baseball

    • Mitchell College had five players selected to the D3baseball.com All-New England team. Seniors Kyle Hartenstein and Garet Griffin represented the Mariners on the first team, while senior Eddie Santiago of New London, junior Eric Marriott and sophomore Jakari Pellegrini were named to the third team.

    Hartenstein and Griffin are the first Mitchell teammates to earn All-New England first team status in the same season. They helped lead the Mariners to a 31-10 record that included the program's sixth New England Collegiate Conference title and its fifth NCAA tournament appearance.

    Hartenstein, the first team second baseman for the second straight year, was a three-time all-conference pick and 2018 NECC Player of the Year. He batted .390 with 33 RBI and 52 runs scored in 39 games. During the season he became Mitchell's all-time career leader in hits (233), runs (167), RBI (128), total bases (314), games played (158) and starts (158).

    Griffin, an All-New England second team shortstop last season, batted a team-high .392 in 41 games and led the Mariners in RBI (52), hits (65), triples (7), homers (6), stolen bases (21) and total bases (102). In three seasons at Mitchell he hit .383 and ranks among the school's all-time leaders in runs (116), hits (165), triples (10), homers (13), RBI (117) and steals (33).

    Santiago, a lefty starter and all-NECC first team selection, earned All-New England honors for the first time in his career by going 6-2 with a 2.78 ERA in 11 starts. Marriott was an All-NECC centerfielder who battled leadoff and hit. 377 with 33 RBI, 49 runs and 13 stolen bases while Pellegrini went 5-0 in 10 stars with a 2.65 ERA.
