    Local roundup: Schooners top SteepleCats 6-2

    North Adams, Mass. — UConn's Chris Winkel hit a two-run homer to help lead the Mystic Schooners to a 6-2 win over the North Adams SteepleCats in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game on Thursday night.

    Kumar Nambiar (Yale) improved to 2-0 with the win. He allowed six hits and an unearned run over six innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) had a two-run single for the Schooners (3-5). 

    Zone 6 Legion baseball

    • Connor McCrea pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts and Hendrik Khoury hit a two-run double as New London beat Ledyard-Pawcatuck, 5-2. Thomas Brown had an RBI single for New London (5-1) and Monty Johnson scored on a wild pitch and stole a base. Weston Bruce doubled twice for Ledyard-Pawcatuck (1-2).

    • Norwich lost to Danielson on Wednesday, 2-1. Grafton Angevine struck out eight over four innings and Robert Thorburn was 3-for-3 for Norwich (0-5).

    Road racing

    • Brandon Mehlinger of Lisbon won the St. Catherine of Siena 5K in Preston, finishing in 17:35. Brianna Minervino of Higganum was the top female finisher, coming in 20th in 23:59. Also finishing in the top 10 were Nathan Lieske of Bozrah (18:37), Dylan McGuire of Preston (18:50), Digby Ludlow of Preston (19:36), Christopher Ladyga of Lisbon (19:36), Aidan Gallagher of Preston (20:01), Adam Schumaker of Griswold (20:14), John Minervino of Higganum (20:25), Christian Dubrueil of Preston (20:47) and Daniel Caron of Chaplin (20:58).

    District 10 softball (10-12)

    • Charlotte Cabral struck out seven batters over four innings as Groton/Mystic beat Lyme/Old Lyme 10-0. Angelica Tompkins and Cabral had two hits each for Groton/Mystic. Lyme/Old Lyme pitcher Jamie Bucior struck out four in three innings.

    • Arlene McKiernan pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts as Salem/Bozrah beat Montville 18-3 on Wednesday. Mia Williamson drove in three runs for Salem/Bozrah and teammates Neva Flickinger, Karly Sorrentino, Skylar Bell and Felicia Silvas also drove in runs. Jaisey Galvin, Erica Velazquez and Ellyce Lynes scored runs for Montville.
