    Local roundup: Olivier wins Battle of Stonington 5K

    Stonington — Mark Olivier of North Stonington won the Battle of Stonington 5K road race Tuesday in 15 minutes, 59 seconds, edging Nicholas Migani of Higganum (16:04) and Sam Alexander of Mystic (16:09.)

    Erin Hub of Westerly won the women's division in 20:06, followed by Christina Miller of Warwick, R.I. (20:56) and Julia Adrian of Groton (21:01).

    There were 166 finishers.

    Guzman named Pitcher of the Week

    • Carlos Guzman of the Connecticut Tigers was named New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week for the week of Aug. 12-18. Guzman, a 20-year-old right-hander from Maracay, Venezuela, pitched six hitless innings in a start Aug. 16 against the first-place Tri-City ValleyCats. Guzman struck out three batters with one walk and threw 75 pitches in a 2-1 victory, improving Guzman's record to 3-3 with a 3.12 earned run average. Guzman has 44 strikeouts in 43.1 innings and is holding opponents to a .203 batting average. In his last three starts, he has allowed one earned run in 17 innings with eight hits, three walks and 13 strikeouts.

    Tigers fall

    • Hudson Valley Renegades' pitchers retired the final 14 Connecticut Tigers' batters in a row in a 6-0 New York-Penn League victory at Dodd Stadium.

    Ryan Karstetter had the lone extra-base hit for the Tigers (25-34) on a double in the second inning and Karstetter, Jeremiah Burks and Jose King recorded the only three hits for Connecticut against Hudson Valley starter Nicholas Padilla. Hudson Valley relievers Tanner Dodson and Justin Montgomery pitched four perfect innings with three combined strikeouts.

    Hudson Valley improved to 7-1 against Connecticut this season, as the Tigers fell 8 1/2 games behind the first-place Tri-City ValleyCats in the Stedler Division with 14 games remaining.
