    Local roundup: Coast Guard volleyball wins 10th straight

    New London — Makenna Martin had a match-high 30 assists and Amanda Dake added 10 kills as the Coast Guard women's volleyball team won its 10th straight match on Tuesday, 25-11, 25-22, 25-14 over Mount Holyoke in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference match.

    Mary Sweet and Lauren Hatfield both had eight kills for the Bears (13-1, 3-0), who are off to their best start since starting the 2009 season 13-1. They also received votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll.

    Veronica Hine, the reigning NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week, added a team-high 11 digs for Coast Guard.

    Cameron Graham had a match-high 12 digs for Mount Holyoke (5-4, 0-3) and Sarah Caggiano and Jamesa Allen each had five kills.

    The Bears scored 10 straight points in Game 1 to go ahead, 23-9. Dake had five kills in that game.

    A Hatfield kill in the second game tied the match at 17. She then served back-to-back aces and the Bears never trailed in that game.

    Dake had three kills as Coast Guard opened up a 17-7 lead in Game 3.

    H.S. girls' swimming

    • Gabrielle Schaufler won two events and was part of a winning relay team for Ledyard in an 88-65 win over Lyman Memorial/Windham/Parish Hill in an Eastern Connecticut Conference meet. Schaufler won the 200-yard freestyle (2:30.46) and 500 freestyle (6:35.80) and teamed with Katey Truncale, Madeline Johanson and Olivia Strelevitz to win the 200 medley relay in 2:15.96. Alexandra Martinez-Garcia, Ellie Shea, Aubrie Lozier, Strelevitz and Johanson also won events for Ledyard (1-1, 1-1).

    • Paulomi Sardar won two events and was on two winning relay teams as Fitch/Stonington beat NFA 89-75 in an ECC meet. Sardar won the 200-yard freestyle (2:14.92) and 50 freestyle (28.11). Emily Tarinelli and Rebecca Lowney won also events for Fitch (1-1, 1-1), which swept the three relays thanks to Hope Sowle, Kyle Heard, Alyson Lowney, Madison Rea, Sardar and Tarinelli. Gloria Ng of NFA (1-2, 1-1) won the 100 backstroke (1:09.02) and 200 individual relay (2:25.35) and teammates Lane Perkins and Danielle Toppa also won events.

    • The ECC meet between East Lyme and Waterford at Waterford was postponed due to thunder and lightning in the area. A makeup date was not announced.

    H.S. girls' soccer

    • Olivia Meehan scored two goals and had an assist as Montville beat Griswold 4-0 in its ECC Division III opener. Lauren Velazquez had a goal and an assist, Michaela MacCracken scored a goal, Kara Beaupre had two assists and Lauren Ross made three saves to earn her 25th career shutout for Montville (2-1).   

    H.S. volleyball

    • Riley Riewerts scored 23 points as Norwich Tech beat Grasso Tech 25-15, 25-12, 25-16 in a Connecticut Technical conference match. Karen Preza had eight aces and Riewerts had 11 aces and seven assists for Norwich Tech (2-4). Grasso is 0-5.

    Men's tennis

    • Coast Guard won all nine matches in straight sets to blank Division II Assumption 9-0 in the season-opener for both teams. The matched was played indoors due to the rain. Tom Hackett, Kyle Fager, Arthur Wicke, Chris Lansing, Lucas Arora and Ryan Casey won singles matches along with the doubles teams of Hackett and Jack Phillips, Fager-Lansing and Wicke-Arora.
