    Local colleges: Mitchell's Still wins Blazer Classic men's cross country title

    Chicopee, Mass. — Mitchell College's David Still, a sophomore from New London, captured individual honors at the Blazer Classic Invitational men's cross country meet on Saturday.

    Still finished the 8K event in 30 minutes, 21 seconds, eight seconds faster than the rest of the field. It was his second career individual title.

    Western New England won the team title while the Mariners finished fifth. Mark Garceau also cracked the top five for Mitchell, placing fourth in 30:46.

    In other races:

    • Junior Danny Aschale placed third overall as No. 24 Connecticut College placed sixth at the Purple Invitational in Williamstown, Mass. Aschale finished in 25:55.8 over the 8K course as the Camels finished with 225 points. RPI won the team title with 41 points. Senior Scott Mason placed 20th for Conn in 26:34.2. Junior Andre Gallant placed 53rd in 27:35.5 and Coast Guard Academy placed 12th with 336 points.

    Women's cross country

    • Coast Guard placed seventh at the Purple Valley Invitational with 173 points. MIT, ranked fourth in Division III, won the race with 41 points. Sophomore Kaitlyn Mooney finished second for the second straight year, crossing the finish line in 22:16.17 over the 6K course. Freshman Laurel Felt also finished in the top 10 by placing ninth in 23:14.1, while Olivia Suski was 43rd in 24:15.12. Conn College placed 10th with 276 points as sophomore Meredith Cronin finished 34th in 23:59.8 to lead the Camels while freshman Rachel House was 49th (24:27.8) and sophomore Tarvis Hintlian was 51st (24:28.9).

    • Mitchell placed fourth in the Blazer Classic behind Paige Aguilar, who placed 11th overall in 28:26 over the 6K course. Teammate Kate McCormack placed 13th in 28:46.

    Men's soccer

    • Liam Donelan's goal in the 20th minute lifted No. 21 Conn College to a 1-0 victory over Hamilton in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Camels (6-0, 3-0) have won five of their matches by shutout and outscored their opponents 16-1. Goalie AJ Marcucci made five saves against Hamilton.

    • Sebastian Arboleda scored just 2:38 into sudden death overtime to give Eastern Nazarene a 3-2 victory over Mitchell in the New England Collegiate Conference. Old Lyme's William Ferguson and Dylan Thambirasa scored goals for the Mariners (2-4, 101), who had their nine-game winning streak against NECC opponents snapped. Seth Strader of Norwich Free Academy made nine saves in goal for Mitchell.

    • Gavin Faucette's goal in the 60th minute lifted Emerson to a 1-0 win over Coast Guard in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Goalie Dakota Harich made three saves for the Bears (1-5-2, 0-2).

    Women's soccer

    • Coast Guard overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat WPI 2-1 in the NEWMAC. Freshman Brielle Pearce, assisted by Waterford's Claire Hurley, tied the game for the Bears (4-3, 1-1) in the first half before Felicia Lombardi, off an assist from Kat Retz, broke the headlock 5:39 into the second half. Hurley now has six assists, one shy of CGA's single-season record set by Sarah Giardina in 2000. Freshman Katharina Commins made two saves for the Bears whle Stonington's Gabriela Hoops made four saves for WPI (5-4, 0-2).

    • Katie Tenefrancia scored in the 79th minute on Hamilton's only shot of the second half to give the Continentals a 2-1 win over Conn College in the NESCAC. Tori Kretzmer tapped in a pass from Kat Norton for the Camels' lone goal. Conn (4-2, 0-2) held a 16-9 edge in shots.

    • Lindsey Smith had three goals and an assist to lead Becker to a 6-0 win over Mitchell in the NECC. Goalie Drew Johndrow made 14 saves for the Mariners (1-6, 0-2).

    Volleyball

    • Coast Guard's 10-match winning streak came to an end when the Bears lost 3-1 to MIT in the NEWMAC. Game scores were 26-24, 15-25, 25-15 and 25-16. CGA (14-2, 3-1) did bounce back to beat Manhattanville 16-25, 25-14, 25-13 and 25-18. Against MIT, Amanda Dake had 11 kills and Bridget Boyle 10 while Makenna Martin had 21 assists, Lauren Hatford had 14 digs and Veronica Hine had 12 digs and four aces. Against Manhattanville, Hartfield finished 11 kills and 12 digs, Boyle had 10 kills, Martin had 21 assists and Nikki Sefcik had 19 assists and three aces.

    • Conn College dropped a pair of non-conference matches, losing to Clark 3-2 (25-23, 25-27, 25-23, 21-25, 18-16) and host Wheaton 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-22). Emma Hewlin had a career high 17 kills for the Camels (4-7) against Clark while Grace McGee added 39 assists and 11 digs and Eliza Wolcott had 11 kills and 12 digs. Against Wheaton, McGee had 21 assists while Maddie Rust had nine digs and Elle Kass had nine kills.

    • Mitchell dropped a pair of 3-0 decisions, losing to Norwich 25-8, 25-15, 25-12 and host New England College 25-13, 25-11 and 25-17. Laurissa Amaker had four kills against NEC for the Mariners (0-8) while Shyla Phillips-Krick had 10 digs in each match.

    Men's tennis

    • Coast Guard lost to Vassar 5-4 despite singles wins by Tom Hackett and Jack Phillips, who also teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles. Arthur Wicke and Lucas Arora also won at No. 3 doubles for the Bears.

    Men's golf

    • Mitchell defeated Albertus Magnus 311-435 on Friday. Montville's Sam Gaboury shot an 80 to lead the Mariners while Michael Izzo added an 82.
