    Local roundup: Nick Braga helps Valley/Old Lyme win second straight

    Deep River — Nick Braga scored three touchdowns, two via the run, as Valley Regional/Old Lyme rolled to a 47-7 Pequot Football League Sassacus Division victory over Lewis Mills on Friday.

    The Warriors (7-1, 5-1) have won two straight and remain in the hunt for a trip to the Class S playoffs. They finish the season on Nov. 20 at home against rival Haddam-Killingworth (7-1), which plays Saturday at Old Saybrook/Westbrook.

    Braga opened the scoring with a 43-yard run. After the Spartans (0-9, 0-7) tied the game, Jae'len Arnum put Valley ahead for good with a nine-yard touchdown run. Arnum added a four-yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 21-7, and then Braga took a Jack Cox screen pass and scampered 50 yards for the score and a 28-7 lead, which held until halftime.

    In the second half, Braga had a 25-yard run, Jason O'Brien returned a punt 60 yards for a score, and Anthony Rosario completed the scoring with a four-yard run.

    O'Brien and Garrett Watrous had interceptions for Valley/Old Lyme.

    H.S. volleyball

    • No. 13 Montville was eliminated by No. 12 Woodland 3-0 in the Class M quarterfinals. Game scores were 25-15, 28-26 and 26-24. The Indians, who finish 17-8, set a school single-season record for wins and reached the quarterfinals for the first time in program history.

    College field hockey

    • Defending champion UConn advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I tournament with a 5-0 victor over Rutgers in the first round at College Park, Md. The fifth-ranked Huskies (19-3) will play No. 2 Maryland, a 2-1 first-round winner over Albany (N.Y.) on Sunday for a trip to the Final Four. The host Terps beat UConn 4-2 during the regular season in Storrs.

    Svea Boker and Cecile Pieper each had a goal and an assist for UConn while Karo Kueskes, Maddy Wray and Jessica Dembrowski also scored goals and Amanda Collins and Antonia Tiedtke each had an assist. Goalie Cheyenne Sprecher had three saves to earn the shutout.

    Wolves name new assistant

    • Darryl Gibson has been named offensive coordinator of the New England Black Wolves. Gibson has coached at a variety of levels since 2007, including the 2018 season as offensive coach with the Cobourg Kodiaks in Major Series Lacrosse. He also enjoyed a 13-year career in the National Lacrosse League. "We're extremely excited to have someone of Darryl's character and reputation join our staff," general manager Rich Lisk said in a release.

    Women's basketball

    • Waterford's Mia Brennan scored 38 points as No. 3 Avery Point beat Bristol Community College in an NJCAA game on Thursday night. Bekah Sanders of Quaker Hill had 22 points and 23 rebounds, Ashley Burke scored 19, Julitza Delgado and Kalianna Dingui had 18 points each and Brennan had 11 rebounds, eight assists, six steals and three blocked shots for the Pointers (3-0).

    Men's basketball

    • Former Montville standout John Domijan had 22 points and five rebounds for Avery Point in a 111-59 loss to Bristol Community College in an NJCAA game on Thursday night. Trevor Yeomans of Waterford had 11 points and Elijah Malboeuf-Boyd scored nine for Avery Point (0-3).

    Men's soccer

    • Max Stiegwardt scored with 12 seconds left in double overtime to lead No. 1 Central Florida to a 3-2 win over No. 4 UConn in an American Athletic Conference tournament semifinals on Thursday in Orlando. Abdou Mbacke Thiam had a goal and an assist for UConn (11-5-2), Josh Burnett scored a goal and Gianluca Catalano made four saves for the Huskies.
