    Local roundup: T-More beats Redemption 74-65 in home opener

    Montville — Ghared Boyce scored 20 points as St. Thomas More won its home opener with a 74-65 men's basketball victory over Redemption Christian Academy on Monday.

    Mik Lynott added 13 points and Jair Curry 10 for the Chancellors, who also got eight points and five blocked shots from Wayne Bristol.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Second-seeded Stonington plays No. 3 Immaculate in the Class S state semifinals on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Wethersfield High School. The Bears (17-1-2) advanced with a 2-0 victory over New Fairfield in the quarterfinals while Immaculate eliminated defending champion North Branford 3-1. Immaculate (14-1-1) also defeated New Fairfield 2-1 during the regular season.

    Men's soccer

    • UConn received an at-large bid into the NCAA Division I tournament. The Huskies (11-5-2) will host Atlantic 10 champion Rhode Island at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the first round. The winner will travel to No. 2 overall seed Indiana in the second round. The Hoosiers beat the Huskies 1-0 during the regular season. This will be UConn's 36th NCAA appearance and first since 2015.

    Women's basketball

    • UConn seniors Napheesa Collier and Katie Lou Samuelson, and junior point guard Crystal Dangerfield have been named to the 50-player Naismith Trophy watch list, a national player of the year award. The midseason 30 team will be announced on Feb. 11, 2019, and that list will be narrowed down to 10 semifinalist on March 4 and four finalists on March 22. The award will be presented on April 6. Collier, Samuelson and Dangerfield were named to the Wooden Award watch list last week. The three are American Athletic Conference preseason first team selections.
