    Local roundup: Old Lyme advances to Shoreline softball semifinals

    Old Lyme — Fourth-seeded Old Lyme broke open a tight game with a six-run outburst in the third and the Wildcats went on to defeat No. 5 Hale-Ray 10-3 in the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference softball tournament on Thursday.

    The Wildcats (13-8) will play at top-seeded Valley Regional, a 12-0 five-inning winner over No. 8 Old Saybrook, in Thursday's semifinals at 4 p.m.

    "One of our goals this year was to go a little further than last year, and we accomplished that," Old Lyme coach Tim Gavin said. "And we beat Hale-Ray three times in a season, which I don't think we've ever done in our history. ... We'll be playing with a little bit of house money (against Valley).

    The game was tied 2-2 when Old Lyme had its outburst which was capped by back-to-back two-run hits, a double by Grace Lathrop and a single by Alison Ward. Winning pitcher Victoria Gage did the rest scattering six hits and allowing just one run over the final six innings.

    Gage finished 3-for-3 with a run scored while Lathrop had two hits, two runs and two RBI, Ward had two hits, two RBI and one run, Paige Kolesnik had two doubles, one RBI and one run, and Catey Battalino had two this with a run and two RBI.

    Girls' lacrosse

    • Audrey Matson, a Williams School junior, was named SENE Player of the Year in a voting of the league's coaches. Matson, a midfielder from New London, scored 33 goals and added 14 assists for the Blues, who reached the finals of the SENE tournament.

    "Audrey is a dynamic player who plays a huge role both on offense and defense," Williams coach Allie Buckley said in a release. "Her energetic spirit carries onto the lacrosse field and she has shown the coaching staff this year that she is willing to step up to the plate and be a strong leader on the field.

    "She carries the ball well, is a selfless player, and hustles hard on defense."

    H.S. baseball

    • Bowen Baker went 3-for-4, including a triple and an inside-the-park home run, with three RBI and scored as Wheeler edged Putnam, 4-3, in an ECC Division IV game. Matt Pierce went 3-for-3, including a double, and scored for Wheeler (7-13, 5-3) and Lukas Jones added an RBI double.

    Boys' golf

    • Grant Hamilton and Jacob Geary each shot 37 to share medalist honors as Stonington rolled to a 7-0 win over Plainfield. RJ Parilla added a 39 and Cooper Wall a 40 for the Bears (13-5-1), who had an impressive medal score of 153.

    • Old Lyme lost to East Catholic 156-164 in a nonleague match. Corey Drummond and Thomads Creagan led Old Lyme (11-3) with a 39s and teammate Connor Maguire shot a 40. 

    College baseball

    • Pat Winkel's single to right in the ninth inning snapped a 7-7 tie and lifted UConn to a 9-7 win over Wichita State in the American Athletic Conference tournament in Clearwater, Fla. The Huskies (35-22) advanced to the semifinal round for fifth consecutive year and will face either the Shockers or East Carolina on Saturday at 10 a.m. The Wichita State-East Carolina winner will have to beat the Huskies twice to reach Sunday's championship game.

    College track & field

    • Coast Guard Academy's Leilani Salang placed 10th overall in the women's discus on the opening day of the NCAA Division III track and field championships in Geneva, Ohio. Salang, a sophomore appearing in the nationals for the first time, had a throw of 136 feet, 4 inches. The Bears' Ben Zarlengo, competing in the men's discus, finished in 12th place. The junior, also making his first trip to the nationals, had a throw of 154-9.

    Zarlengo will compete in the hammer throw on Saturday along with a pair of CGA women. Junior Adora Lawrence will run in the 400-meter race while sophomore Kaitlyn Mooney is entered in the 5K.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Coast Guard Academy senior Anthony Wyler and juniors Riley McNulty and Justin Edwards received United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division III All-America honorable mentions honors.

    McNulty, the NEWMAC Athlete of the Year was an honorable choice for the second straight year. He led the NEWMAC in both points (95) and goals (57) while adding 38 assists. Edwards, an All-NEWMAC first team pick, led a Bears defense that was second in the conference in caused turnovers (143) and third in ground balls (589). Edwards caused a team-best 23 turnovers and had 36 ground balls. Wyler, an All-NEWMAC second team pick, had 23 goals and 11 assists, finishing his career with 107 goals and 46 assists.
