Son organizes benefit to help father

Groton — Friends and family of a Groton man and former youth coach suffering from colon cancer will hold a benefit with picnic-style food on Saturday.

Dan Porter of Judson Avenue in Mystic is ill and his son Greg Porter organized the benefit with the help of family friends.

The event will be held from noon until 7 p.m. at the Groton Lodge of Elks, 700 Shennecossett Road, Groton.

"He has dedicated much of his adult life to coaching youth sport teams, both boys and girls," Greg Porter wrote of his father, who volunteered in the Mystic Little League, the Groton Basketball Association and the Groton Soccer League.

Dan Porter is a single father with three children ages 24, 19 and 16.

"Dan is known for being a tough, rugged and intense man, but everyone who knows him understands the care and passion he has for people," his son said.

Dan Porter played football as a high school and college student and worked on charter fishing boats when he was younger, his son wrote.

Friends are seeking a $30 donation to attend the benefit, which will include picnic food like hamburgers, hot dogs, ziti and chicken, as well as keg beer.

An auction will be held at 4 p.m.
