    East Lyme schools referendum Tuesday

East Lyme — Voting for the elementary schools referendum will take place between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday at the East Lyme Community Center on Society Road.

Voters will decide whether to support a $37.5 million bonding proposal to upgrade the town's three elementary schools with improvements to air conditioning, security, Wi-Fi, and accessibility for the handicapped, and new paint, flooring, doors and light fixtures among other alterations.

The proposal includes the replacement of the roof at Flanders Elementary School, the reconfiguration of the bus and drop-off areas and the re-establishment of the second gym at Lillie B. Haynes School, and the replacement of windows and upgrades to the gym and exterior masonry at Niantic Center School.

Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Newton said about $5.4 million in state reimbursement is expected.

The referendum was originally scheduled for March 14, but was canceled because of a snowstorm.
