New London — A sailor who was medically evacuated from the USS North Dakota submarine late Friday after intentionally shooting himself was in stable condition at Yale New Haven Hospital as of Saturday morning.

Chief Petty Officer Steve Owsley, public affairs officer for the Naval Submarine Support Center New London, said the identity of the sailor, the nature of his injuries and other specifics are being withheld because the incident remains under investigation.

About 10:20 p.m. Friday, vehicles from the New London Fire Department, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Fire and Emergency Services, and Yale New Haven Health arrived at Fort Trumbull to receive the patient. The sailor was transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital shortly before midnight. He later was transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital, according to Owsley.

Cmdr. Sarah Self-Kyler said late Friday that the gunshot wound was intentional and the submarine was coordinating the sailor's transport to a shore-based facility for further treatment. 

Sailors are not allowed to bring their personal weapons aboard but submarines have government-issued firearms for force protection.

"Our thoughts are with the sailor's family, friends and the crew of the North Dakota," Self-Kyler said.

The North Dakota is a Virginia-class attack submarine based in Groton. Each Virginia sub has an independent duty corpsman aboard who is trained to perform medical duties, such as triage.
