Movie tip: "A Star Is Born"

A Star Is Born

This is one of my favorite movies of the year. Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s wonderful chemistry sparks the love story between his alcoholic fading music star Jackson Maine and her blue-collar, on-the-rise singer Ally. They are a joy to watch as Jack and Ally thrillingly perform onstage and as they tumble into love offstage (the adoring way Jack looks at Ally is swoon-worthy). The leads play against their personas — Cooper becomes a scruffy, broken-down guy, and Gaga leaves All Things Glam behind for a natural look and manner — and they feel totally authentic in their roles. The melodrama gets too overheated near the end, but this “Star” is still wildly entertaining.
