Firefighters extinguish fire at New London upholstery business

New London — Firefighters extinguished a fire Thursday at Andy’s Trim Shop, a custom upholstery business at 509 Broad St.

The smell of smoke was reported by a nearby business owner shortly after 9 p.m.

Firefighters arrived to find a small fire burning inside a garage bay at the unoccupied building.

New London Fire Battalion Chief Ted Sargent said firefighters forced their way in and extinguished the fire within five minutes. Two plastic garbage receptacles were burning, he said.

The garage area sustained smoke and minor heat damage.

The city’s fire marshal was on scene late Thursday investigating the cause of the fire.
