Groton — About half of those who live on or around Midway Oval were without power on Friday after a large tree fell on a car, taking wires with it.

According to Groton Utilities officials, a crew was on scene by about 10:30 a.m. The tree was cleared by early afternoon, and crews continued working to get the wires operating.

A photo of the tree, which fell between Elizabeth and Gary courts, shows it easily spanned the width of Midway Oval.

Groton Town police Deputy Chief Paul Gately said two people were in the car when the sizeable tree fell, uprooted at its base. Luckily, he said, the bulk of the tree missed the car. Its outer branches hit the hood of the car but caused only minor damage.

Gately said there were no serious injuries in the incident, although one person was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

In New London, wind caused a tree from a Connecticut Avenue property to fall on the house at 95 West St. about 5:30 p.m. on Friday. There was one person in the house at the time but he was not injured, Fire Battalion Chief Edward Sargent said, and it was the only house to lose power.

The tree warped a shed and caused some damage to the home.

Sargent said there are "two holes in the roof, and then it looks like a branch went through the roof in another spot and went through the ceiling on the top floor."
