New London — A man was stabbed in the parking lot of Thames River Apartments on Saturday evening, according to police.

A 911 caller reported the stabbing about 5:30 p.m., police said in a news release.

Police found a man in the parking lot of the apartment complex with a stab wound in his upper chest. Emergency responders treated the man on scene and took him to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

Interim New London Housing Authority Executive Director Lee Erdmann said the victim does not live in the apartments, which residents have been vacating this month after the Housing Authority decided to abandon the complex in the face of a lawsuit and the buildings' physical deterioration.

Police told staff at the apartments that the stabbing was not fatal, Erdmann said.

The entrance to the complex was draped in police tape and several officers stood watch Saturday night, allowing both residents and visitors to enter and leave.

A New London police K-9 officer arrived at the apartments after 6 p.m. and was walking around the property with a dog while residents let their pets outside in the complex's courtyard.

Police asked anyone with information about the incident to call (860) 447-5269, ext. 0, or submit information anonymously by texting NLPDTip and the information to 847411.
