Updated: NASCAR driver among two reported dead in plane crash

North Branford — Two people were killed when a small plane crashed into the woods near the Guilford town line at approximately 1 p.m. Saturday.

Police and fire units responded to the West Street area in Guilford, near the site of the crash. Connecticut State Police were assisting Guilford police at the crash, which left two people dead, according to Fox 61.

One of the dead is veteran NASCAR modified driver Ted Christopher, according to WFSB-3. The name of the other victim is being withheld pending notification of family.

The plane didn't hit any houses or people when it went down.

Jeff Mulready, who lives nearby, was out for a walk behind his house when he found the plane. He and his fiancee, Carrie Carigman, immediately called 911.

When they heard the noise, they had no idea it was a crash, Mulready said.

Carigman said she saw two men in their 50s or 60s in the small plane. One man had crashed through the windshield, she said.

Fire units from both towns were on scene, according to the North Branford Fire Department.
