New Haven initiative turns guns into gardening tools

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A Connecticut community's initiative is turning guns into gardening tools to promote nonviolence.

WFSB-TV reports New Haven sculptor Gar Waterman partnered with the New Haven Police Department, Yale New Haven Hospital's Injury Free Coalition for Kids and the Newtown Foundation for the project. Waterman and his team are working to convert more than 100 guns collected through a buyback event into gardening tools.

Dr. Pina Violano, of Yale New Haven Hospital, says the initiative allows organizers to turn potentially harmful weapons "into something productive."

The Colorado-based nonprofit RAWtools Inc. is helping the effort as well. Member Mike Martin says the New Haven program brings people together to stamp out gun violence.

Violano says the finished tools will be donated to two local agricultural schools.
