HARTFORD (AP) — Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont says he's reached a bipartisan agreement with legislative leaders to adopt emergency legislation that will enable federal workers impacted by the partial government shutdown to obtain interest-free loans backed by the state.

The loans would be offered through state banks and credit unions.

Lamont's office said Friday proposed legislation is being drafted. It's expected to be released soon.

The four top Democratic and Republican legislative leaders hope to hold sessions on Tuesday to vote on the bill, which could help hundreds of federal employees in Connecticut who are struggling to make ends meet without a paycheck.

Initial loans will provide affected employees up to one month's net pay, capped at $5,000. If the shutdown continues, participating banks and the state will work to provide additional loans.
