It's another milestone for Auriemma should UConn win
A win today in the American Athletic Conference season-opener for the UConn women's basketball team will mean another milestone for Hall of Fame coach Geno Auriemma.
If the No. 2 Huskies top Southern Methodist University at the XL Center in Hartford (1 p.m., SNY), Auriemma will take over as the women's coach with the all-time best winning percentage (.86888), passing former Louisiana Tech coach Leon Barmore's mark of .86878. Former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt is third at .8407. Auriemma is 887-134 heading into today's game and is the only women's coach to win nine national titles.
UConn is 8-1, most recently topping UCLA 86-50 at Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday. UConn's Breanna Stewart (18.0 points per game, 7 rebounds per game) was last week's AAC Player of the Week and Gabby Williams was named the AAC Freshman of the Week. Williams is averaging 13.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game over the last two games, while shooting 70.6 percent.
The Huskies are 27-5 all-time in conference openers and have won 22 of their last 23.
SMU is 4-7 overall, losing their last four in a row. Freshman forward Alicia Froling is the Mustangs' leading scorer with 11.3 points per game.
UConn next takes on No. 10 Duke in a nonconference game at 9 p.m. Monday at the XL Center, to be televised by ESPN2.
