Providence (AP) — Rhode Island's attorney general says pharmacy chain Rite Aid has agreed to pay $300,000 for improperly dispensing certain medications.

Peter Kilmartin and the Drug Enforcement Administration said Monday that Rite Aid stores in Rhode Island dispensed controlled substances in excess of statutory maximums from September 2014 to February 2017.

Kilmartin says the quantities were prescribed by physicians, but everyone in the pharmaceutical supply chain must comply with limits.

Pennsylvania-based Rite Aid has agreed to remedial measures to ensure compliance. A Rite Aid spokesman didn't immediately return messages seeking comment.

The controlled substances included migraine treatments and medicine to control appetite loss in AIDS patients.

Kilmartin's office says it's trying to hold companies responsible for failing to comply with the Controlled Substances Act and for their role in the ongoing opioid crisis.
