    ‘Just the facts, ma’m’

William Kelley’s letter, printed in The Day on July 2, “Imagine the Truth on the Front Page” sends a very strong and important message to The Day and all newspaper management, about printing the truth on the front page - above the fold, but, with one exception. That exception is that more than the truth is often needed!

The truth is simply the summation of the beliefs of an individual’s recall of events, which may differ among individuals. Even in a court of law, there are at least three truths identified to a witness, swearing in before the court, to be prepared to state: “The truth! the whole truth! and nothing but the truth!” All three truths may be different among individuals, but the FACTS should never change, once they are properly identified.

What is needed to be printed, on every front page, above the fold, in very clear language, are the simple facts of the matter. Just as Sgt. Joe Friday very succinctly said, “The facts ma’m, just the facts.” This may be very difficult for any paper using its editorial or opinion page as the front page.
