Sun’s Moriah Jefferson undergoes ankle surgery
Mohegan — Connecticut Sun guard Moriah Jefferson underwent arthroscopic surgery on her ailing right ankle, the team announced Tuesday. Jefferson will be reevaluated in three weeks to assess her return to play.
The surgery was performed Monday by Dr. Adrianna L. Gianakos, an orthopedic surgeon out of Yale Medicine.
Jefferson, a first-round draft pick by the San Antonio Stars in 2016, played the 2023 season for the Phoenix Mercury, finishing with 10.5 points and 3.6 assists per game. She was acquired by the Sun on Feb. 3 in a sign-and-trade deal with the Mercury.
She has appeared in nine games for Connecticut this season, averaging 2.1 points per game, last playing four minutes in the Sun’s game at Chicago on June 12.
A 2016 UConn graduate, Jefferson won four straight national championships with the Huskies and finished her collegiate career with 1,532 points and 659 assists, holding the program’s assist record until it was recently broken by Nika Muhl. At UConn, she was an All-American, as well as the winner of the Nancy Lieberman Award as the nation’s top point guard.
The Sun next play Thursday at Washington before returning home Friday to meet Atlanta.
