Advance immigration entry date

Section 249 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (“Act”) currently authorizes Department of Homeland Security and immigration courts to grant lawful permanent residence to qualifying applicants who have entered the United States before Jan. 1, 1972. As time marches on, fewer and fewer qualified residents are able to meet this threshold entry date; thereby making such benefit unavailable. For this reason,

Congress should advance the entry date requirement under section 249(a) of the act, (borrowing the DACA entry date specifications), to fairly enable long-term productive elderly residents to qualify for this important benefit. Readers should encourage congressmen to make this easy fix. Now is the time.
