Root cause of Connecticut’s energy crisis
As a concerned resident, I’m alarmed by Rep. Holly Cheeseman’s recent proposals to further deregulate our energy system. Connecticut's energy crisis didn’t appear out of nowhere — it was born from the deregulation under Gov. John Rowland, which allowed companies like Eversource to monopolize our energy infrastructure. The result? Connecticut has skyrocketing rates and a system that prioritizes corporate profits over everyday citizens' needs.
In her op-ed to The Day, “State needs to slow down on EV vehicle conversion,” Rep. Cheeseman deflected blame from her voting history and suggested more deregulation, instead of addressing the root cause. This is like throwing gasoline on a fire.
Our state’s high energy costs are a direct consequence of past policies that handed over control to big corporations, stripping away our ability to manage prices and ensure fair competition. What we need now is leadership that will confront these monopolies, not bolster them. It’s time to reevaluate our strategy and prioritize the needs of Connecticut residents over corporate interests. Our focus should be on restoring oversight, not further weakening it. Only then can we reduce costs and establish a more just energy system. The 37th District needs a state representative who cares about finding solutions, not deflecting blame.
