CIAC football playoffs / Championship Saturday roundup

Timothy Herget had two touchdown catches and two interceptions and Quinn Fay had four of his team’s eight sacks as top-ranked Darien routed No. 7 Ridgefield 28-7 to win its second straight CIAC Class LL football title on Saturday at West Haven High School.

The Blue Wave’s defensive line of tackles Justin Plank and Andrew Stueber and ends Cord Fox and Fay had their way with Ridgefield and were the difference in the game.

“That was the best defensive line (play) that we’ve played all year,” Fay (seven tackles) said. “Everyone had at least one sack.”

It was the sixth state title for the Blue Wave (13-0). They were ranked No. 1 The Day's state coaches’ polls all season and will finish first for a second-straight season.

“It’s really satisfying,” Darien head coach Rob Trifone said of his team’s accomplishments. “Some people thought we’d fall off a little bit (this season). ‘You lost (quarterback) Timmy Graham. You lost (running back Shelby) Grant. You lost (receiver Colin) Minicus and (slot back-safety) Hudson Hamill’ and so on and so-forth.

“There was no drop off. There was no drop off at all. And you know what? These young men weren’t going to let it drop off, and that was their attitude all year long.”

Brian Peters completed 17 of 31 passes for 237 yards with three touchdowns for the Blue Wave. Herget had four catches for 91 yards along with his two scores.

Finlay Collins ran 25 times for 166 yards, had five catches for 28 yards and a score, and had six tackles (all solo) with a sack for Darien. Nick Green also scored on a 61-yard interception return.

Drew Fowler completed 22 of 46 passes for 277 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions for the Tigers (10-3). Shane Palmer had seven catches for 74 yards and a touchdown and Chris Longo added three catches for 103 yards.

“Your margin of error against this team is very, very slim,” Ridgefield head coach Kevin Callahan said. “We felt their wrath because we couldn’t do what we had to do.”

    No. 2 Ansonia 28, No. 4 Rocky Hill 21

Ansonia scored 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to rally past Rocky Hill 28-21 in the Class S championship game at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.

It was a record-20th CIAC state title for the second-seeded chargers (13-0), who trailed 14-6 after three quarters. Rocky Hill, the fourth seed making its first appearance in a state final, finished 11-2.

"Everyone expects us to get here every year, but it's so hard to get here," said Ansonia coach Tom Brockett, whose Chargers lost in the finals the previous two seasons."This team has come so far to continue this tradition. It's night and day from when we started practice."

Junior Markell Dobbs rushed for 191 yards on 34 carries, but he had plenty of help. Quarterback Bryson Cafaro's 33-yard run set up Dobb's 1-yard TD to cut the Rocky Hill's lead to 14-12 with 10:43 left.

Cafaro added an 8-yard touchdown run with 6:17 left to extend the Chargers' lead to 28-14.

Joe Catania rushed for 192 yards and two touchdowns for Rocky Hill.

"We had a great year and played Ansonia tough," Rocky Hill coach Mark Fritz said. "We're very similar in that we run the ball and play solid defense. This game could have gone either way."

Hillhouse (12-1), which trailed 21-20 at the half, held the Cadets (10-3) to just 25 total yards in the second half to win its first state title since 2012. Its won six CIAC titles.
