A Waterford native, who is second in charge at the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, has retired after a 29-year career with the agency.

The agency announced Monday that Special Agent Samuel Worth, who served as deputy director of NCIS for two years, retired Aug. 10,

In that role, Worth was responsible for the oversight of all investigative, operational, and business activities. A large part of NCIS' work is criminal investigations, including major felony investigations such as sexual assault and narcotics cases, as well as economic crimes.

In an interview with The Day in August 2016 after getting the job, Worth said that he became interested in working for NCIS  while a criminal justice major at Norwich University, a private military college in Northfield, Vt. He said he wanted to travel the world and was attracted to the diversity of the organization's missions.

Worth is one of eight children who grew up in Waterford and graduated from Waterford High School. He and his siblings all were involved in sports and frequented Waterford Beach Park.
