UConn women sweep weekly Big East awards
The UConn women's basketball team, fresh off a 75-52 win over then-No. 18 DePaul last week, swept the Big East Conference's weekly awards on Monday.
Junior Olivia Nelson-Ododa was named Player of the Week and guard Paige Bueckers was named Freshman of the Week for the No. 3 Huskies (6-0), who face their biggest test of the season on Thursday with a non-conference road game at No. 6 Baylor (7-1) in Waco, Texas.
Nelson-Ododa had 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and a season-high 14 rebounds against the Blue Demons, including eight offensive rebounds. It was Nelson-Ododa's third double-double of the season and the fifth straight game where she has shot over 60 percent from the floor.
Bueckers had another solid game all-around game for UConn with 18 points, six rebounds, a game-high four steals and two assists. Bueckers was also 4-for-6 from three-point range and had just one turnover in 35 minutes.
• In other women's basketball news, Eastern Connecticut State University announced Monday it will forego its season due to on-going health risks surrounding COVID-19. The Warriors were scheduled to resume practice on Sunday and open their season on Jan. 23 following a 10-week layoff.
ECSU, which went 24-5 last season, won its second straight Little East Conference tournament and reached the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament, became the fourth LEC program to opt out of the season, joining UMass Boston, Southern Maine and Western Connecticut.
