    Summer Suppers feature homemade pies

    Homemade pies are one of the reasons Niantic Community Churches’ Summer Suppers have been going strong since 1966. On Tuesday, Aug. 6, the supper kicks off at 5:30 p.m. featuring a dinner with all the fixings, including dinner rolls, drinks and a selection of homemade pies and desserts.

    The suppers are served in air conditioned comfort. Outdoor seating is also provided. Takeout is another option for those who want to eat at home. Tickets are available at the door for $15 for adults and $10 for children under 10.

    Senior center in Old Lyme plans events

    The Lymes’ Senior Center has a host of events planned this month and next, including a Beginners Ballroom Dancing class at 10 a.m. Aug. 14 at First Congregational Church of Old Lyme.

    The center is also co-sponsoring with the Old Lyme VFW a Veterans Coffeehouse at 9:45 a.m. Aug. 21 at Saint Ann’s Church, 82 Shore Road, Old Lyme.

    In addition, there will be a “Building Buzz” meeting at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 11:15 AM to talk about the progress of the senior center’s new building.

    COMO Thrift holds Fall Into Fashion shopping event

    On Tuesday, July 30, from 4 to 7 p.m., COMO Thrift Shop is offering special after hours to provide shoppers with the opportunity to discover quality fall fashion finds.

    Shoppers can explore the latest trends and get their wardrobe ready for fall at a fraction of retail prices. Guests will have the chance to mingle with fellow fashion lovers, enjoy refreshments, and check out fall essentials like scarves, boots, jackets, sweatshirts, and more.

    The COMO Thrift Shop is located at 45 Cutler St. in Stonington, beneath the viaduct to the Stonington Borough. Proceeds support programming at the Stonington Community Center. For more information, visit thecomo.org/thrift.

    Meditation program at Bill Memorial Library

    Join local author and Episcopal deacon Ronald Steed for a meditation program at Bill Memorial Library on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 10:30 a.m.. The class will be held on the lawn, weather permitting. Bring a yoga mat, lawn chair or towel to sit on. In the event of inclement weather, the program will be held inside.

    Midsummer Maritime Living History Day

    The Leffingwell House Museum will host Midsummer Maritime Living History Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17.

    Learn about whaling from role players and view a four-language shipping permit signed by President Thomas Jefferson and his secretary James Madison and two actual journals of Whaling voyages written by blacksmith Thomas Crocker and seaman John Perkins, both from Norwich. In addition, visitors can speak with Thomas Crocker, who will talk about the role of a blacksmith and what he made while hunting whale out of New London.

    Also, visit with Mary Brewster, wife of the captain of the whaling ship Tiger, who went a-whaling with her husband in 1845 on the same voyage as John Perkins. Learn about her life aboard ship, as recorded in her journal during the voyage.

    Walks on Mondays start at Otis Library

    Mental Health Mondays Walks will be held on Mondays at 11:30 a.m. and noon starting at the Otis Library Community Room.

    The group gathers will take a walk the downtown area. In inclement weather, stretching and chair yoga will be offered instead. Drop in; no registration required.

    In addition, a Book C.A.M.P. (Challenging a Man's Performance) will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug.12 in the Otis Library Meeting Room. It’s a new club open to all adult males, and will use library resources to spark discussion on mentorship and personal growth. The group meets on the second Monday of each month. Drop in; no registration required.

    Community Conversations on mental health

    A group discussing the crisis in mental health in the community will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14 in the Otis Library Community Room.

    Equip yourself with the skills to recognize the signs of someone in a mental health crisis and to intervene effectively. Master the steps to effectively question, persuade, and refer someone in crisis.

    The program is open to individuals aged 16 and above, presented by the Health Education Center.

    Events for adults at Groton Public Library

    Summer Supper Club will be among the programs hosted in August at Groton Public Library

    From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, choose from a display of cookbooks labeled with one of four categories: appetizer, side dish, entree, or dessert. Then, bring your book and your creation to the Meet & Eat to share your culinary experiences at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29. Supplies are limited on a first-come, first-served basis.

    Other library events include the League of Women Voters hosting a book discussion of “Great Expectations” by Vinson Cunningham at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5. Copies of the book are available at the library; registration is encouraged.

    The library’s Morning Matinee program will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, and its Saturday Cinema at 2 p.m. Aug. 24. Call (860) 441-6750 for this month’s film titles.

    Readers can participate in the Groton Public Library Book Group at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13 to discuss “Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt. Copies of the book are available at the library; call or reserve online.

    Not Your Mother’s Book Group meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28. Meet up with fellow Millennials and Gen Z-ers (ages 21-42) at the Groton Public Library to socialize, play games, and talk about books. This month’s theme is “Read, Renew, Repeat.” Choose from 3 options: 1) Read a book about the outdoors, environmentalism, or nature. 2) Retry (renew) a book that you have attempted to read before but never finished. 3) Repeat an old favorite.

    Otis Library programs for kids

    Otis library’s August programming for children starts at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Aug. 2, with Stories at Slater Memorial Museum, 108 Crescent St., Norwich; read stories and do crafts; free admission, for ages 3-6 and their families, call (860) 887-2506 for information.

    Ledyard Public Library August event for adults

    Ledyard Public Library offers a wide range of events for adults in August, starting with the Silent Book Club from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday Aug. 5 at Gales Ferry Library, 18 Hurlbutt Road. At Silent Book Club, bring your own ebook, audiobook, novel, comic books, or borrow one from the library and settle in for 45 minutes of silent reading.     Also, check out the Ledyard Library Cookbook Club at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday Aug. 6 at the Ledyard Senior Center. Share recipes and food from selected cookbooks. This month focuses on Gordon Ramsay.

    Children and teen events in Ledyard

    Ledyard Public Library offers children and teen events in August, starting with Hot Wheels Hoopla at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, at Gales Ferry Library; kids ages 3 and up will decorate their own city play mat and get to take home two hot wheels cars.     Other events include Percy Jackson Trivia at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 at Ledyard Bill Library; teens and tweens ages 10 - 18 can try a trivia event to test your skills with winners getting a $10 Amazon gift card; registration is required at www.ledyardlibrary.org.

    Also there will be an Engineering Workshop at 6 p.m. Monday Aug. 5; a member of The Society of Women Engineers, New England Shoreline Section will lead participants in designing and building an air-powered rocket that can hit a distant target.     Lyme Public Library events in August

    Lyme Public Library is hosting events in August that include a chess club at 7 p.m. Aug. 1. Email Programreg@lymepl.org to register. Chess boards are supplied by the library.

    On Aug. 3, Cool-ology Wonder Tots: A House for Hermit Crab will be held at 11 a.m. for children ages 3-6, and on Aug. 6. Shell & Bee Studio Art Class Series - Afternoon Art will be hosted at 4 p.m. for elementary age students.

    On Aug. 7, Lyme Library Trivia Night Club will be held at 7 p.m., and at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 13 the Racial Equity Book Club meets on Zoom.

    From 4 to 5 p.m. Aug. 14, One-on One Tech Support Help Day with Emily Lewis is scheduled at the library. Sign-up sheets are at the Circulation Desk.

    At 11 a.m. Aug. 16, Yoga and Meditation with Joan Fisler will be held at the Red Barn Yoga; $10 per class paid to the instructor at the door. Participants should bring yoga mats if they have them, but a limited number of mats will be made available.

    Public Library of New London August adult events

    Reading, knitting and playing games are among the activities available to adults in August at the Public Library of New London starting with Community Knit from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays. Bring your project materials and socialize with others.

    The New London Chess Club meets 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays.Players of all abilities are welcome.

    The Silent Book Club meets from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 1; join fellow introverts and read a book of your choosing in companionable silence; call (860) 447-1411 to register.

    The sinking of the SS Larchmont in 1907 is the subject of a talk by Daniel Harrington at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 6, and author Angela Wicke will give a reading from her new book “I Left My Hormones in Another World” and a Q&A at 5 p.m. Aug. 7.

    Movies are always fun in the summer, and from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 12 there will be a showing of “Dune” (2021), followed from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 26 with “Dune Part 2.” The same day at 7 p.m., join the Usual Suspects Mystery Book Club discussion led by local author Faye Ringel.     A Medicare Information Session will be held 5-6 p.m. Aug. 22. A bilingual (English and Spanish) presentation will address Medicare and its recent changes; adults; free.

    Beatles presentation July 31 in Norwich

    On Wednesday, July 31, at 5:30 p.m., Connecticut author and Beatles expert Charles F. Rosenay, well known internationally as a Beatles festival and music producer, will be bringing his interactive presentation to the Otis Library in Norwich. The free admission event, part of the “Connecticut Author Trail” promotion, will include a talk on the famed band, a rare video screening, plus a book-signing of Rosenay’s latest release, “The Book of Top 10 Beatles Lists, issued by Kiwi Publishing.

    Officially titled “Celebrities, Actors, Authors, Mods & Rockers: The Book of Top 10 Beatles Lists,” the book is available on Amazon, but the author is looking forward to meeting area friends and fellow fans so he can sign copies personally.
