Who is he? (Who who/who who)

    Roger Daltrey (TheWho.com)

Anyone who’s listened to many of Roger Daltrey’s solo records knows the Who vocalist is a fan of classic American soul music – and he’s got a fine lion’s roar of a voice to pull that stuff off.

    Or at least he did.

Daltrey’s 80, now, and none of us could blame him if it was a tough assignment for him to belt out material he recorded as a younger man. And that includes his work with the Who.

Daltrey performs Sunday in the Mohegan Sun Arena, so all the above speculation comes into play. Obviously, Daltrey can’t just trot out Who songs because the set would be (justifiably) compared to a Who concert. Just as clearly, Daltrey HAS to play some Who tunes – maybe even a lot of them – or folks will be disappointed.

The two-part question will be: Can the mixture of lesser-known solo tunes hold up to greatness of the Who, and can Daltrey pull off the vocal demands of ALL the music?

    I wouldn’t bet against him.

Roger Daltrey, 7 p.m. Sunday, Mohegan Sun Arena; with KT Tunstall in support; $70.95 and up; mohegansun.com.
