Phish has two-night stand at Mohegan Sun

Part of the fun of being a True Fan of a particular band or musician is that shared sense of belonging you have with other True Fans.

In our world today, the greatest example of this would be Swifties — those stalwarts who’ve pledged allegiance to pop star Taylor Swift. Others of similar commitment would be Deadheads (Grateful Dead), Kiss Army (Kiss) and Juggalos (Insane Clown Posse).

I bring all this up because Vermont deities Phish return to the Mohegan Sun Arena Tuesday and Wednesday — and THEIR Phans are real-time exercises in prime lunacy.

I speak from experience. In 2019 when the group played the Sun, I showed up — Phish virgin that I was — and psychologically marveled over the experience.

The Phans, y’see, have evolved in their Phishness to such an extent that they’ve developed arcane tribal rites: song-cued choreography, manners of dress, shared drug networks and other insider kookery. After entering the arena, I instantly felt a vibe like “Who invited HIM?!” from some, although a few others welcomed me with an odd solemnity and told me to “Have a good show, brother!”

And I guess they did. Me? I left after the first set.

    Phish, 7:30 p.m. July 23 and 24, Mohegan Sun Arena; $119 and up; mohegansun.com.
