The Machine plays Pink Floyd at the Garde

    The Machine (Wendy Podmenik Darugar)

For tribute bands to give potential fans an idea of the artist they’re attempting to replicate, they have to come up with a name that immediately connects with the tributees.

The Hotel Californias, for example, immediately suggests an Eagles homage. Just like The Hey Judes would instantly connote a Beatles act.

In this spirit, if any band’s song or album titles provided plenty of possibilities for future tribute bands, it’s Pink Floyd. Here are three great band names if you want to start a Pink Floyd cover act:

    1. Some Pipers at the Gates of Dawn

    2. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Songs

    3. Just One of the Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict

And while all of those will resonate with Floyd Heads, maybe it’s better to simplify, as in the case of The Machine Plays Pink Floyd, an exemplary PF tribute band — so-named after “Welcome to the Machine,” the second tune on the “Wish You Were Here” album.

The Machine Plays Pink Floyd will play (some Pink Floyd) Saturday in New London’s Garde Arts Center. They not only do a scarily good job of replicating the source material, but their set list also presents songs that ambitiously and rewardingly range from “Piper at the Gates of Dawn” through “The Endless River.”

    The Machine, 8 p.m. Saturday, Garde Arts Center, 325 State St., New London; $35-$65; gardearts.org, (860) 444-7373.
