Midsummer celebration returns to Old Lyme

The Midsummer Festival in Old Lyme returns this weekend. (Submitted)

A free concert. Art shows, and science experiments. A classic car show. Kids’ activities. A dog talent competition.

That’s just part of what will be going on during this year’s Midsummer Festival in Old Lyme.

The event is a production of the Old Lyme Arts District, a partnership of a dozen arts and cultural organizations and businesses along Lyme Street.

It begins on Friday with a free concert by Locomotion from 7 to 9 p.m. on the lawn of the Florence Griswold Museum, 96 Lyme St., overlooking the Lieutenant River. (Bring your own lawn chairs or blankets.)

The main part of the Midsummer Festival happens Saturday on the grounds of the Lyme Art Association, Old Lyme Inn, Flo Gris, and Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center. The LYSB 5K Run/Walk and Kids K is at 8 a.m.; pre-registration is available at LYSB.org or onsite starting at 6:45 a.m. Saturday, and then the rest of the fest happens from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Visitors can see art exhibition at the Lyme Art Association at 90 Lyme St. (where there will be vendors, kids’ activities and more); Flo Gris (where there will be food trucks and art vendors including the Lyme Artisans Guild) and the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts, 84 Lyme St. They can view art by the “Midsummer Fence Artists” at the Old Lyme Inn, which will also be the site of free family-friendly crafts and activities.

Fest-goers can ooh and ahh at canines during the Parading Paws Dog Show from 10 to 10:30 a.m. at the FloGris Museum. They can walk around the Lyme-Old Lyme Lions’ Club Classic Car Show, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center. Admission is $5.

Midsummer Festival, primarily 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Lyme Street, Old Lyme; events are subject to change; go to ExploreOldLyme.com/midsummer-festival for detailed information and the Old Lyme Arts District Facebook page for updates.
