Is this still the ‘land of the free’?

After reading the letter, “The tragic case of Ashley Babbitt,” (Jan. 10), I could not believe our country had allowed this.
The fact that this girl was shot by a Capital guard was bad, but to read that the girl was unarmed, and the guard was allowed to go unchallenged over this leaves me shocked.
Then to add the fact that one year later, on the anniversary of her daughter’s death, the mother to this girl was handcuffed, arrested, and jailed, not for protesting, but for jaywalking? Has jaywalking become an arrestable crime? Really?
What sort of justice is this? Do I still live in America, the land of the free or has my country been taken over by dictators and no one has informed us?
I do not care if you vote Democrat or Republican, surely you cannot agree with this. What is being done about it? Our House and Senate needs to start doing their job. How about protecting the rights of the people that voted you into office? How about protecting our Constitution?
