Get the facts on global warming

An earlier letter to the editor writer wrote, “Global Warming Hype, July 25, 2023,” citing an article in a medical journal,The Lancet, and then laid down some malignant misinformation regarding global warming. This writer claims that the Lancet study demonstrates extreme cold is far more dangerous than extreme warming; and therefore global warming is mere hyperbole. This writer asserts, astoundingly, that death from extreme cold is 17 times more probable than death from extreme heat. That assertion, of course, is preposterous.

Data readily available from the CDC or EPA shows that between 1987 and 2018, “11,000 Americans died from heat related causes, according to death certificates.” By comparison, over a slightly longer period, 1979-2016, “19,000 died from cold related causes.” If the earlier writer’s assertion held, this count of deaths would have been 323,000. The earlier writer may have mistakenly misinterpreted the Lancet findings. If instead, there was intention to gaslight the readers, then readers have a right to know that the The Day allows the publication of misleading public health information.
