Zoning codes will protect land
East Lyme is a town of many natural resources. It has evolved from a seaside fishing community with a strong farming community to a town with fragmented areas of prime soils and scenic beauty. In this age of climate change, it makes sense to promote the protection of areas for farming to feed our residents, both from the land and the sea.
The 2020 Plan of Community Development (POCD) says that it is time to preserve the lands that are remaining by adopting a more stringent zoning code. Putting affordable housing in a village setting is appropriate, as well as protecting our aquifer and Long Island Sound. That plan was created with input for all the town's residents, and needs to be respected.
