Heart health is the way forward

Nearly half of all U.S. adults have cardiovascular disease, even though it’s largely preventable. The American Heart Association is committed to building healthy communities and as a volunteer, I encourage everyone to take steps to reduce their risk of heart disease — starting today! Living healthy includes eating healthy, and there are many opportunities to do that in Eastern Connecticut.

Visiting local farmers’ markets is an easy and affordable way to find community-grown, seasonal, nutritious produce at reasonable prices where we live. For adults, the association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. Our communities offer a multitude of options that encourage physical activity.

This fall, you can get moving by participating in the Eastern Connecticut Heart Walk. As co-chair of the event, I’m working with a committed team of volunteers to create a fun, family-friendly way to come together and walk along the Connecticut coast at UConn-Avery Point while helping to save lives.

Along with eating right and being active, real health includes creating well-being through self-care. Practicing mindfulness, managing stress and connecting socially are some ways to incorporate self-care into daily routines. Visit heart.org for more ways to improve your overall health.
