Lord's Point residents concerned about alleged kidnapper in area

Stonington - Police have been receiving calls from Lord's Point residents who are concerned that a local man released on bail after allegedly trying to kidnap a young woman at gunpoint in Rhode Island last week is now living with his mother on Lord's Point.

When Matthew Klotz, 27, appeared in a Rhode Island court Monday, a judge allowed him to leave the state but said he must stay with his mother at 33 Hopkins St. on Lord's Point. Word spread around the waterfront neighborhood Monday afternoon that he had been released and would be living among them. Residents said Klotz has not lived in their neighborhood in a few years.

Police Chief J. Darren Stewart said Tuesday that he been alerted about Klotz's arrest and subsequent release and had spoken to the Narragansett, R.I., police chief about the case. Some residents have told The Day they worry about girls and young women walking through the neighborhood and trick or treating next week.

"If people have concerns or see something they should call us and we'll talk to them or send an officer out there," Stewart said.

Lord's Point residents say they are also concerned because it was their neighborhood in 2000 that police said the then 16-year-old Klotz broke into the home of an 88-year-old woman in the middle of the night and tried to sexually assault her.

While Klotz maintained he never tried to sexually assault the elderly woman, he pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary and received a suspended seven-year prison term and four years' probation.

Klotz was arrested Saturday by Narragansett police in connection with the attempted abduction of a 20-year-old woman while she was jogging Friday afternoon. On Monday he posted $2,000 in cash to secure bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 29, where he faces charges of kidnapping, assault with a dangerous weapon and carrying a dangerous weapon while committing a crime of violence.

Police said Klotz was holding a firearm when he grabbed the woman from behind and ordered her into his truck.

Klotz can have no contact with the victim and not possess any firearms, Narragansett police said. They also said they are investigating whether Klotz has been stalking other females in Rhode Island over the past year.
