Event to focus on pets left homeless by storm

Stonington - Animal control agencies from across the state, along with private shelters, will be at the Bob Valenti Automall on Saturday to find home for cats and dogs that have been orphaned because of Hurricane Sandy.

Stonington Animal Control Officer Rae-Jean Davis said Wednesday that some people along the Connecticut coast whose homes were lost or damaged in the storm had to give up their pets because they are now in living arrangements where pets aren't allowed. Others can no longer afford to care for their pets.

"After the hurricane, we thought this would be a good way to get these animals placed," she said. "These are animals that are used to living in homes."

She said the Valenti family, which had hosted a previous adoption event at their dealership, asked what it could do to help pets involved in the storm.

Davis said some of the pets will be at the dealership Saturday and will be available for adoption that day. Other groups will have paperwork for people to fill out who want to adopt a pet.

Prospective pet owners are asked to bring a cat carrier or dog leash to the event. The fee to obtain a pet ranges from no fee to $50.

The latter is the fee that state law requires municipal shelters to charge for pets that are not spayed or neutered. In exchange, pet owners get a discount on the spaying and neutering procedure.

Groton Animal Foundation's Pet Pantry will also be on hand collecting donations of cat litter and pet food for animals in need.
